We now offer the Optos Optomap retinal scan, which can uncover many ocular and general health problems. It allows exploration of different layers both in and under the retina, as well as any activity in the retina, such as dying, degenerating cells or highly metabolic cells. This is particularly useful in detecting and diagnosing macular degeneration, malignant melanoma, etc. The scan can even penetrate dense cataracts in order to get a clear image of the retina. Retinal holes, tears, detachments, and weakened areas of the retina are easily visualized, as the device scans a very wide, 200-degree image of the retina. It becomes a permanent part of a patient’s medical record and can be utilized as a baseline record, which allows future comparisons to determine changes, and the presence of new lesions, etc. It isn’t just a photograph, but rather a high tech diagnostic tool.
